Easy Crochet Ombré Blanket – Soup Before Supper

image0aaa

I love this blanket because it looks impressive but is super easy to make. It’s the yarn that does all the work, not you. This is a great project for a beginner who is learning the basics of crochet. It’s also perfect for someone who wants a project to do while vegging out in front of the tv because there’s little counting involved and doesn’t demand a high level of attention.

This blanket uses only a single crochet stitch. You should be familiar with turning the chain and changing colors. This primer from The Spruce goes over the single crochet stitch, this one goes over changing colors, and this one goes over turning the chain.

You will need three colors for this blanket: The ombré yarn and two other complementary colors. Here is what I used for this blanket:

3 skeins of Red Heart Super Saver Ombré Yarn (10 oz. each, so 30 oz. all together). I used Spearmint for this blanket, but there are many of there are many other options to choose from.

8 oz complementary color A, 8 oz. I used this: 1 skein Red Heart Super Saver Light Grey

8 oz complementary color B, 8 oz. I used this: 1 skein Caron Peach One Pound

5.5 mm (U.S I-9) crochet hook

A Note About the Yarns: I grew up crocheting with this type of yarn (acrylic) and I like it for blankets. It’s easy to use and but more importantly, it’s inexpensive to buy, so you don’t get that whole “It’d be cheaper to just buy a blanket” sense of remorse when you purchase it. While it can be a bit stiff, soaking it in vinegar, then machine washing can soften it up. After you’ve finished your blanket, use 4 tablespoons white vinegar per one-gallon water and let soak for half an hour. Rinse it out, then wash (delicate cycle!) with fabric softener and dry.

The Pattern:

Start with your ombré yarn. Chain 151. Turn.

Single crochet across your chain stitch. Turn. Single crochet until you run out of your ombré yarn, or 42 rows.

At the end of the row, change to Color A. Single crochet for 8 rows.

At the end of the 8th row, change to Color B. Crochet for 14 rows.

At the end of the 14th row, change to Color A. Single crochet for 8 rows.

Change to the ombré yarn. Single crochet for 42 rows. After 42 rows, change to Color A and single crochet for 8 rows. Change to Color B. Crochet for 14 rows. Change to Color A and crochet for 8 rows. (You’re just repeating what you did above!).

Change to your ombré yarn. Crochet for 42 rows. And now you are done!
