As soon as you step into the castle, you embark on a voyage through the ages. Delve into the rich history of this fortress, often referred to as the “Gibraltar of the East“, which once fell under the rule of the Byzantines, Crusaders, Venetians, and Turks. Stroll through its narrow, cobblestone alleys, and marvel at the beautifully renovated stone structures. Sample gourmet delicacies at an upscale restaurant perched atop a tower house, and experience a romantic overnight stay in a stone-crafted tower. The “Kastro” (castle) is split into two sections: the lower and upper town.

Exploring the Upper and Lower Town

In the lower town, investigate the ruins of historical buildings, including the Muslim Mosque, a preserved 16th-century structure which now houses the Archaeological Museum, as well as the stunning Byzantine churches. In the uninhabited upper town, you’ll encounter remnants of ancient Byzantine structures. A winding, rocky path will guide you to the Fortress of Youlás, offering a spectacular city view!
