It’s no secret that one of the biggest landmarks in Sydney is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Interestingly, most people think the only way to see the bridge as a pedestrian is to climb it, but if you’re asking yourself if you can walk across Sydney Harbour Bridge, know that you absolutely can!

While you can spend hundreds of dollars to climb the bridge (recommended once in your life) where they harness you up and guide you over the famous steel arch, it’s hugely expensive and not something the budget traveller will be able to afford.

The much cheaper option to see the bridge and its magnificent feat of engineering up close is to simply walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and take in the same panoramic views on a lower level, for FREE.

Well that sounds excellent, doesn’t it, but why write this guide? Well because there isn’t one way to walk across the bridge, there are two ways (north to south, or south to north) – so to help you figure out which route is best for you, keep reading!

Ways To Walk The Sydney Harbour Bridge

The pedestrian footway is only located on the eastern side of the bridge, and to the right of you is the constant flow of traffic and trains which occupy the western side.

To walk across the bridge in one direction as we did, the distance of the span is 504 meters for the bridge section, plus the short additional approaches from the stairways to the start of the span.

The first way you can walk across Sydney Harbour Bridge is by following the route on the Circular Quay side of the harbour, starting from The Rocks District (the oldest neighborhood in Sydney’s CBD).

There’s a sign along Cumberland Street directing you towards a flight of stairs. Once on the pedestrian walkway wander across to the other side and catch the train back to the city from Milsons Point Station.

Doing it this way you can easily access the right side of the bridge, heading towards North Sydney.

The benefit of walking this route is you get views of Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour early on, with the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney in the background. This means you don’t have to walk across the whole bridge for iconic views.
