Trolltunga: Enjoy the View from Norway’s Most Famous Rock Formation

Troll's Tongue, Norway

A pointy ledge that resembles the tongue of a mischievous troll, known as Trolltunga, is Norway‘s most famous rock formation. Situated 2,300 feet above the gleaming Lake Ringedalsvatnet, hiking to Trolltunga takes between 7-12 hours from start to finish. If you’re a seasoned, physically fit hiker who is yearning to experience the scenic vista of a lifetime—a trip to Trolltunga is an absolute must.

Trolltunga Adventures and Trolltunga Active both offer guided tours of Trolltunga. Trolltunga Adventures offers a 2-day package that includes a stop at a comfortable private camp. Trolltunga Active features seasonal tour packages, including a winter hike that equips travelers with snowshoes and spikes so that they can gaze in awe at frozen waterfalls and sparkling glaciers. One of the great advantages of a guided hike is that tour packages often include food and help you carry heavy equipment—such as tents, sleeping bags, and extra clothing.

From June to September, experienced hikers can trek to Trolltunga without a guide. From October to May, a guide is required because the terrain can be difficult to navigate during the colder months. There are a handful of emergency shelters along the trail that are stocked with sleeping bags and food, in the event of bad weather. The main Trolltunga trailhead is located at P2 in Skjeggedal and generally takes about 8-12 hours to complete. The second trailhead at P3 Magelitopp is slightly shorter, with an estimated hiking time of 7-10 hours.

The Woodnest Treehouses in nearby Odda, Norway, offer cozy accommodations to travelers who wish to be immersed in nature but still soak in a warm bath at the end of a long day of hiking. Few things are as thrilling as a breathtaking hike to a natural stone lookout with no guardrails. Every hiking enthusiast should aspire to trek to Trolltunga at least once.
