Sandstone Wilderness is a region in Central Queensland famous for its diverse landscapes, made up of rainforest, sandstone gorges, tropical islands, gem fields, and Aboriginal art sites.
It extends from the Carnarvon Gorge to Yeppoon in the Capricorn Coast region, the gateway to Great Keppel Island. The Sandstone Wilderness also includes Banana Shire and North Burnett.
Although the exact borders of the Sandstone Wilderness haven’t been laid out, the region is roughly the size of Tasmania, and more National Parks than the Kimberly region in Western Australia!
If you only have seven days, you’re going to want to get your itinerary nailed down to a T as there’s a lot to see and do. So, to help you out, here’s our 7 day Sandstone Wilderness itinerary, which takes you to the highlights and key places!
How many days do you need in Sandstone Wilderness
When putting together our seven-day itinerary of the Sandstone Wilderness region, to be honest, it’s was a challenge to give you this all in seven days.
We understand many travelers have only a short time to explore, and we’re not all blessed with the gift of endless time.
If you can stay longer, then I would say 10 days is the perfect amount of time to see Sandstone Wilderness. The attractions we’ve listed in our 7 day itinerary would be the same as a 10 day itinerary, but you would have more time at each place rather than a whistle-stop tour.
10 days also allows you to extend your stay in each place you love and add in some down time as well.
The Ultimate Sandstone Wilderness Itinerary
We’re starting the Sandstone Wilderness itinerary for you in Carnarvon Gorge, but feel free to switch it around depending on the route you are taking. You may want to visit the coastal attractions first, if you are traveling down from Cairns or up from Brisbane.
Although I think ending it on the islands is the best way to do it!
Day 1-2: Carnarvon Gorge
It’s rare to meet someone who’s done a lot of travel within Australia who does not recommend Carnarvon Gorge as a must-see wonder.
It’s one of our favourite National Parks in Australia and possibly one of the best places in Australia to see wild kangaroos.
You can see them in many places, but we saw more kangaroos and pretty face wallabies here than in any other place.
