A Brief History Of The Durham Bulls

The Durham Bulls are a Triple-A minor league baseball team that currently plays in the International League. They are one level below major league baseball. They are also a Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The team were created by a Durham judge, known as Judge William G. Bramham, who met with the North Carolina League in Raleigh in 1902 who founded the Durham Tobacconists, making them the first league-affiliated team in Durham.

They played their first home game in April 1902 against Trinity College, and their first game in the North Carolina League in May, against the Charlotte Hornets.

They have played under many names, including Raleigh-Durham Mets in 1968, Raleigh-Durham Phillies in 1969, Raleigh-Durham Triangles in 1970–1971, but have been called the Durham Bulls for the majority of their career (1913–1917, 1920–1933, 1936–1943, 1945–1967, 1980-present).

They first renamed to the Durham Bulls in 1913 to honor the city’s famous tobacco brand.

So far, the team have won 17 league championships, 23 division titles, and 4 class titles to date.

They play their home games at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in the city of Durham, a 10-000 seating capacity ball park, which opened in 1995, but underwent a major renovation in 2014.

The mascot is Wool E. Bull.
