Mrs. Makepeace’s class is back in session! We were back homeschooling while traveling the USA with our daughters Kalyra and Savannah, and I didn’t think I’d be taking on the responsibility of teaching my kids while traveling again.
For those who have followed our blog for a while, will know I homeschooled by daughters for 18 months in Australia before 12 months in the USA, so we’ve got this online school system while traveling down.
We call it roadschooling, as we’re traveling from destination to destination, scheduling in lessons in between adventures.

Choosing between distance education, homeschool, or roadschooling
When we traveled around Australia, we chose to teach our kids via distance education, which is when another teacher teaches our child via a virtual classroom (online video, workbooks that we mark, and self study).
Essentially, distance education is like homeschooling except you have a teacher. Homeschooling requires the parent to do the teaching – gulp.
We couldn’t homeschool on the road in Australia as technically we didn’t have a “home base,” which is required by law.
In the USA though, this wasn’t a requirement by law, and so I opted to homeschool and teach myself. Now, I do have a degree in teaching, and have 15 years of teaching experience, which is why I opted to be the teacher.
I admit I dreaded the idea of having to prepare units of work and create lessons and ensure I was on par with curriculum outcomes.
Plus, I knew I just wouldn’t have the time. We were dealing with a growing business as well as finding our feet with such an epic and new full-time journey as a homeschool family.
Distance education while traveling has its good and bad points, which we detail in this post, but it was also quite time-consuming, irrelevant at times and restrictive.
