Balgue
The other main backpacker hub after Moyogalpa, the area surrounding the villages of Balgue and Santa Cruz also offers a number of more luxurious resorts and hotels and has a specific focus on eco-friendly accommodations at both ends of the price range. It’s a more isolated option than staying in Moyogalpa, but you’ll have a few great restaurants right on your doorstep or a short walk away.
Hostels
La Urraca Loca | Traditionally rustic rooms (think colourful treehouse) set in a a large outdoor space filled with plants, flowers, butterflies and even some wild monkeys! Located in Balgue, they also offer Spanish lessons and can arrange tours. There’s no on-site kitchen – only a guest fridge but many cheap restaurants nearby.
El Zopilote | The marmite of Ometepe hostels, people either love the hippie haven of El Zopilote or can’t wait to leave! Located on a permaculture farm, it offers a huge number of activities including yoga, fire dancing, breathwork, cacao ceremonies, has somewhat basic dormitories and private rooms and a farm-to-table restaurant (no guest kitchen though). Find out more or make a booking on hostelworld or booking.com. If it doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you can just stop by for lunch.
Hostel Lazy Crab | Full of bright colours and good vibes, Lazy Crab has a great location a few minutes walk from the beach, the bus stop and several great restaurants. Rooms (dorms and privates) are a little on the basic side but clean and comfortable, and the common areas are great. Find out more or make a reservation on hostelworld or booking.com
Guesthouses & Hotels
Ananda | Located in the Maderas Volcano Reserve, this boutique guest-house (with just four rooms) is perfect for those that appreciate an off-grid, sustainable experience but don’t want to sacrifice the luxuries of a traditional accommodation. They offer private rooms as well as good sized apartments. Reservations can be made via Airbnb (these are the full listings) or booking.com
Eco Lodges
ADR Selvista | Defined by its owner as ‘barefoot luxury’, Selvista offers a variety of treehouses and jungle suites, which – in our opinion – are some of the best accommodation on Ometepe! Alongside incredible views over Maderas, you also have access to the neighbouring organic farm, an open-air kitchen, work space and free breakfast.
You can find the complete accommodation offering on booking.com or alternatively find the individual listings on Airbnb:
