The Swiss cheese-like rock formations of Medicine Rocks State Park in Carter County, Montana look as though they were imported from the moon. Long considered a sacred space by several Native American tribes, the surreal rock formations of Medicine Rocks State Park have attracted visitors for over 11,000 years. Travelers can hike, bike, and picnic in the shadow of some of the most unique rock formations in the West.

Several centuries ago, members of the Crow tribe made offerings to powerful dwarf spirits and built fasting beds for dreams and visions because they believed that the area around Medicine Rocks State Park was blessed by the gods because it was surrounded by an abundance of medicinal plants. In the late 1800s, ranchers moved into the area and often inscribed their names on the rocks. Prior to becoming a state park, Medicine Rocks also served as a popular picnic spot in the early 20th century.

Travelers who wish to avoid large crowds at National Parks like Yellowstone and Glacier can enjoy the off the beaten path natural wonders of Medicine Rock State Park. The sandstone formations at Medicine Rocks State Park are small enough to climb on and the natural cavities in the rocks make for excellent hand and foot holds. Visitors can hike among the rocks and search for Native American rock art and 19th century graffiti. Travelers can also scan the horizon for wildlife such as antelope, mule deer, and rabbits.
Medicine Rocks State Park does allow camping and has toilets, fire rings, and drinking water on-site. Visitors must pay a small entry fee. Medicine Rocks State Park is open year-round from 7 am-10 pm. June-September is the best time to visit if you prefer temperate weather. October-May is ideal for those who enjoy cold weather and tromping around in the snow.

Medicine Rocks State Park is an excellent place to spend the day if you’re traveling from Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. Exploring every arch, cave, and tower in Medicine Rocks State Park can easily take several hours. Medicine Rocks State Park also periodically hosts special events such as Sunset Yoga classes and Dino Shindigs, where paleontologists discuss the dinosaurs that once roamed the region.
