This Under the Sea-inspired Christmas tree lighting delighted guests and spectators at Cebu’s NUSTAR Resort.
I recently visited Cebu to witness the annual lighting of a 35-foot Christmas tree at the Atrium of NUSTAR Resort Cebu. The towering symbol of hope was beautifully decorated with seashells, corals, seahorses, and other sea creatures in various shades of blue, pink, and gold.
When the lights illuminated, it felt as if the atrium transformed into the depths of the ocean. For one enchanted evening, guests and spectators were transported from Cebu’s vibrant coastline into a shimmering underwater world—complete with bubbles of light, cascading gold confetti, and gigantic stars that glowed like underwater pearls.


At the heart of this transformation stood the resort’s grand centerpiece: a Christmas tree unlike any other. Inspired by the ocean floor, the tree featured sea-creature motifs, coral-shaped baubles, and luminous shells. Its topper —a giant starfish —perfectly matched the theme—”Pearl of the Holiday Season.” Families, couples, and visitors gathered around, their faces aglow in the twinkling lights, raising their smartphones to capture the spectacular sight.

The Tree-Lighting Ceremony: A Moment to Remember
As twilight deepened, the formal lighting ceremony began. Key figures from NUSTAR Resort Cebu took the stage, gave short remarks, and called on their “Star Bearers”—local achievers, young talents, and community champions—to place symbolic stars on the tree. Each star represented one of the resort’s core values: Love, Hope, Peace, Joy. When the final star was placed, the lights on the tree exploded into a choreographed sequence of soft blues, greens and silvers—colors drawn from the sea’s palette.
