Prior to the 1900s, the state of West Virginia was home to hundreds of water-powered grist mills. West Virginia residents would cart bags of grain and corn to the mills to be transformed into flour that could be used for cooking and baking. If money was short, it was not uncommon for customers to trade items such as nails, eggs, and milk for several pounds of freshly milled flour. West Virginia’s Glade Creek Grist Mill—which is located in Babcock State Park—is a picturesque working mill situated in scenic Fayette.
The Glade Creek Grist Mill was constructed in 1976 out of vintage parts from a trio of mills that date back to the 1800s. If you’re lucky, you may see the miller hard at work. Visitors can purchase authentic cornmeal and buckwheat flour made at Glade Creek Grist Mill at an on-site gift shop.
The photogenic Glade Creek Grist Mill is one of many captivating attractions at Babcock State Park. Visitors can rent a comfortable cabin that is a short distance from Glade Creek Grist Mill. Babcock State Park is home to cascading Glade Creek Grist Mill Falls, over 20 miles of hiking trails, and serene lakes and streams that are ideal for canoeing and fishing for trout. Visitors often feel as though they have traveled back in time when they see the rustic silhouette of Glade Creek Grist Mill surrounded by breathtakingly beautiful trees, boulders, and pristine flowing water.
Babcock State Park also features a campground with a central bathhouse, coin-operated laundry facilities, and electric hookups. Visitors can also enjoy modern conveniences such as WiFi and cell reception. Those who wish to enjoy the wild beauty of Babcock State Park from a cozy tent can secure their place by reserving a campsite for at least two consecutive nights.
Most of the facilities at Babcock State Park—including the Glade Creek Grist Mill—are open from early spring until October 31st, depending on the weather.
