There are not many waterways, rivers and lakes in Tropical North Queensland that are croc-free, but the picturesque Mossman River in the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest outside Port Douglas is one place they are less likely to roam.
The fast-flowing, freshwater, crystal clear river is surrounded by lush ancient rainforest, and is the perfect place to explore on a stand up paddle board.
With paddle in hand, you can enjoy one of the best forms of cross-training in nature you’ll find.
I’ve witnessed people doing SUP in harbours, at the beach riding waves, and on lakes, but never in an idyllic river setting like the Mossman River.

About the Mossman River
The Mossman River is situated in the Daintree Rainforest, one of the oldest rainforests in the world.
It flows through lush tropical rainforests and past towering mountains, which have been an important resource for the indigenous Kuku Yalanji people for thousands of years who relied on these waters for fishing and as a source of freshwater.
When European settlers came to the region, it was also a key transportation route.
Today, the Mossman River is a stunning part of the rainforest and offers people the chance to see the natural wonders of the Daintree Rainforest from a unique perspective.
It’s common to find tours that go stand up paddle boarding or kayaking on the river because it’s current provides a leisurely cruise.
Further along the river is Mossman Gorge. The visitor’s center advises you don’t go swimming due to its changing conditions, but many people do – I mean, once you see those cool, crystal-clear waters, it’s hard not to say no.
Just be careful when swimming and don’t risk it if you’re not confident.
