Boston’s harbor is one of the most historic places in the United States. Boats have been pulling up to drop off people and goods for centuries. Being a center of conflict during the American Revolution, including a little rebellion by the colonists called the Boston Tea Party, the port has had a storied past. With a history that included the trafficking of enslaved individuals followed by playing a strong role in anti-slavery activism, Boston’s harbor was both a place of bondage and freedom.
To really take advantage of learning about the history of the harbor, I highly recommend the Historic Sightseeing Cruise by City Experiences. My friend, Stephanie, and I went one glorious, sunny, warm day in June and had a magnificent time.
The one-hour cruise left from the Long Wharf where historic buildings like the Custom House got us in the mood to learn some history all why soaking up the sun, having an alcoholic beverage (if we wanted), and cruising around the harbor.
Our narrator was informative, engaging, and fun. His sense of humor was appealing and he definitely knew his history!
We heard tales about gangsters like Whitey Bulger, saw sights from the American Revolution, learned how the harbor became the center of an ecological revolution in the late 1900s, and voyaged past the Harbor Islands, the USS Constitution, an old fort, and wharves galore.
With planes occasionally passing overhead from Logan Airport, we could see how active and thriving the harbor still is.
When we came back we had the best skyline view of Boston I’ve ever seen.
I thought I knew Boston’s history, but I left far more enriched from being on this Boston harbor tour. Not only are the views spectacular, but knowledge is gained in a jovial manner. Our guide engaged us encouraging us to spout off our Boston facts (or at least try). There is a bar for those who need a little liquid courage to participate, or for those who prefer a glass of wine while cruising around.
