Vista is a city in Southern California that lies within San Diego County. Once a part of Mexico, Vista was originally comprised of three ranchos that were formed from a Mexican land grant, including Rancho Buena Vista and Rancho Guajome. Though the rancho era began to fade in the area during the 1850s, Vista’s architecture, cultural scene, and local cuisine are all heavily influenced by its historic past.
Local artists are also inspired by the city’s roots as well as its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, as the many works of public art in Downtown Vista clearly show. The love of art can also be seen in Vista’s performing arts theaters, craft festivals, the Vista Farmers Market, live music events, and in displays throughout the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens.
Located just seven miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, Vista, as well as San Diego and the entire San Pasqual Valley, has a mild Mediterranean climate that is perfect for wine country and sustains the lovely, rolling vineyards. It is also just an hour north of San Diego and its many museums, amusement parks, zoos, and historical sites.

1. Rancho Buena Vista Adobe

Rancho Buena Vista was one of the famous land-grant ranchos originally issued by Mexico to some of its citizens. It was awarded to Felipe Subria by Mexican Governor Pio Pico in 1845.
Subria built a single-story adobe on the land, as well as a small barn. In 1852, the new owner, Jesus Machedo, added to the adobe by constructing several rooms that are still part of the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe structure today.
