History
Establishment
The Guggenheim Museum was established in 1939 by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, under the guidance of its first director, Hilla von Rebay. The museum was created to promote modern and contemporary art, particularly abstract art, and provide artists a space to display their work. The collection started with a focus on non-objective art, but quickly expanded to include other forms of modern art.
The original museum was located in a rented space, but in 1959, the current building, designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, was opened to the public. Expansion
