LRT-1 Cavite Extension: A Game-Changer for Metro Manila Transportation
The LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 is a railway project in the Philippines to connect Filipinos living in the southern part of Metro Manila. The project is expected to operate by the last quarter of 2024 and add 6.7 kilometers of new railway to the existing LRT-1 line. The extension will connect to the LRT-2 and MRT-3 lines. The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), a public-private partnership led by infrastructure giant Metro Pacific Investments Corporation and Ayala Corporation, handles the project.
Stations
The Cavite Extension project includes five new stations on the LRT-1 line. The stations are:
- Redemptorist
- Manila International Airport (MIA)
- Asia World
- Ninoy Aquino
- Dr. Santos.
The MIA Station will be the closest to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), although it will not connect directly to NAIA.
Meanwhile, Asia World Station will be directly connected to the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange or PITX, where commuters can board city and provincial buses. Three more stations are planned besides those in the first phase:
- Las Piñas
- Zapote
- Niog
Fares
There are no confirmed fares yet for trips to any of the five stations. Normally, the fare matrix of railway operators must be approved by the Rail Regulatory Unit and the Department of Transportation secretary.
Timeline
The LRMC first broke ground for the new stations in May 2019, with physical construction beginning on September 29, 2019. The project then faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of the end of October 2023, the project was at a 95% progress rate for civil and system works. The LRMC targets to complete and operate the five stations by the last quarter of 2024.
The LRT-1 Cavite Ext project continues to shape up as it registered a 94.1% progress rate as of the end of the third quarter of 2023 for the civil and system works of the 6.7-kilometer phase 1 project, composed of five new stations that are in various stages of development.
