Eurostar returns to service but other trains cancelled amid severe weather
Hundreds of trains have been cancelled on Sunday leaving New Year’s Eve plans in tatters across the UK.
Several rail companies have warned passengers not to travel amid staff shortages just one day after a flooded tunnel left 30,000 Eurostar passengers stranded.
Eurostar finally resumed operations on Sunday morning but passengers are still expected to face delays due to speed restrictions, staff shortages and bad weather.
Northern Trains has issued a Do Not Travel notice for 31 December on links from Manchester Victoria to Chester and Stalybridge, and from Manchester Piccadilly to Chester via Altrincham.
LNER has cancelled or curtailed more than 20 trains on New Year’s Eve and most Thameslink trains are being cancelled due to staff shortage. The usual overnight services will not run at all in the early hours of New Year’s day.
It comes as the Met Office has warned severe gales and heavy showers may lead to disruption to transport services on the last day of the year.
The forecasters issued a yellow weather warning spanning from south-west Wales to Cornwall and Devon which could bring 75mph winds and lashing rain.
