Georgia is one of those states that you don’t think is a hot destination, and then you go and you absolutely fall in love with it, and that’s because there are so many things to do in Georgia and so many great attractions – you’ll never run out of things to keep you excited.

I also love Georgia for the warm, Southern hospitality, the abundance of nature, the quirky small towns and lively cities. It also boasts beautiful beaches and mountains, which are perfect for unique outdoor adventures.

Savannah, Georgia

If you’re not sure what places to visit in GA, this guide has all the top attractions in the Empire State of the South – including some cool bucket list moments thrown in for good measure.

Things to Do in Georgia

1. Explore Savannah’s Historic District

If you’re not sure which city to visit in Georgia, then our favorite has to be Savannah. We love this city and visited several times whilst living in Raleigh, North Carolina – we also named our youngest daughter “Savannah” for a reason!

The reason we love Savannah so much is because of the historic district, which is the largest, urban community-wide historic district in the USA.

It’s a neighborhood of firsts; the first public museum in the USA (Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences), the first (and oldest) the African American Baptist Church, and it’s also home to the oldest oak tree in the country – named Candler Oak, which was planted in the 1700s.

Aside from its historical importance, this neighborhood in Savannah is picturesque and charming, with Georgian buildings characterized by shuttered windows and ornate porches and balconies, framed by tree-lined streets and cobbled roads.

It feels like we’ve left the USA and slipped into Renaissance Italy!

You only need to spend a few days exploring the Savannah Historic District, some notable sights to visit are Forsyth Park, The Olde Pink House, The Cathedral Basilica of St. John and Wormsloe State Historic Site.

Be sure to wander around Bonaventure Cemetery, which is arguably the most beautiful cemetery we’ve seen with blooming flowers and scenic bluffs, and check out the City Market to find top-quality restaurants and entertainment options.

2. Visit The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta
