Nestled between rolling hills and the historic campus of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill is a charming town full of wonderful things to do, it will have you leaving saying “I came for the barbecue, but I stayed for the fun!”

There is a good reason why Chapel Hill is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in America, and as being the best college town in the States.

The Legendary Old Well

It’s a town that has been created around the college, which was one of the first public Universities in the country, so you can bet there are tons of iconic things to do in Chapel Hill.

Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or just someone looking for a quiet town to chill in for a weekend, here are some things not to miss in Chapel Hill.

1. Explore Franklin Street

Franklin St, at the front of the college in downtown Chapel Hill, is the street where all the vibrancy lives in Chapel Hill.

It’s the main thoroughfare with many restaurants, cafes, bars, and of course, the ubiquitous Carolina blue merchandise stores.

It’s one of our favorite places to hang out, and at times it’s really hard to describe why.

Sometimes a love for a place is unexplainable because its a connection you find with the energy that vibrates from there. And there is plenty of energy in Chapel Hill.

Maybe that might explain a little the pull that this place has on you.

2. Eat at Sutton’s Drug Store

Four years of visiting Chapel Hill and we walked past this pharmacy every time without venturing inside. Why would we? We didn’t need medicine.

On our last visit to Chapel Hill, we needed some gum, so walked into Sutton’s to buy some and discovered it wasn’t a drugstore but a Chapel Hill icon. It was a step back in time.

At the back of the pharmacy, the chemist in his white lab coat, walked around chatting to his guests sitting in the crowded diner.

A small counter wrapped around the tiny cooking area, and patrons sat on spinning stools eating hamburgers, hot dogs and fries, or waiting for the food to be cooked in front of them.

Along the walls and hanging from the ceilings were hundreds of photos of happy diners. On further investigation we found photos of Tyler Hansborough, Sean May, Danny Green and all our favorite basketball players.
