Historical Background

Tagbilaran Cathedral was founded in 1595 by the Jesuit missionaries who came to Bohol and is one of the first six parishes established by them.

The cathedral is dedicated to St. Joseph the Worker, a favorite among the Jesuits, and was enthroned as the patron saint by Rev. Fr. Joaquin de San Jose in 1767, a year before the Jesuits were expelled from the country. The church’s construction began in 1787 and was completed in 1855 by Fr. Valero de San Sebastian.

The cathedral has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years. In 1888, a new facade was added to the church, and in 1922 the bell tower was erected. The cathedral was also damaged during World War II but was later restored.

Today, the cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Tagbilaran, which comprises Bohol’s western half. The diocese was created on November 8, 1941, and the cathedral became its seat. Later, the diocese gave birth to the Diocese of Talibon in 1986.
