The last time we were in Italy on a road trip (in a rickshaw), one place we really wanted to visit was San Gimignano.
We had lots of people recommend it on Instagram and Facebook yet for some reason or the other, we never quite made it to San Gimignano.
Well, this time, we had lots of time to spare and were only about 30 minutes away so once we were done with what-was-meant-to-be-breakfast-but-was-now-lunch…followed by a walk through our Tuscan farm (I make that sound as I own it 🙂 ) we hopped into the car and sped off in search of this glorious medieval Tuscan town.
Long before you arrive at San Gimignano, you can see it from the distance sitting proudly atop the hill, which is a sight in itself and worth stopping the car to marvel at – even if just for a quick picture.
Within a few minutes, we found ourselves in the town and in search of ice cream to go with that Tuscan sunshine (parking situation here is pretty good by the way – you can’t park in the town itself but you can just outside the walls).
San Gimignano is one beautiful Tuscan town! It’s everything I imagined it would be and more. Tuscany is my favourite part of Italy and places like this are the reason why (well, that and those seemingly endless vineyards 😉 ).
We slowly made our way through the town, stopping for even more gelato and a peruse at the local farmer’s shops for something to take home. (Okay, fine – I was looking for San Gimignano wine but to be fair, it comes very highly recommended by people here so I figured I might as well see what the fuss was all about 🙂 ).
You couldn’t have picked a better day to explore this amazing town too – delicious sunshine and blue skies all add to the appeal of San Gimignano.
Some of the best views (after the centre of the town, of course) are from its balcony which showcase the famed rolling Tuscan hills to perfection.
Eventually, we decided to kick off our shoes (or flip flops in my case) and find a local bar where we spent the evening, people (and sunset) watching ably assisted by some of San Gimignano’s finest wines…
Sheer Italian perfection! This is truly how summer days should be spent. 🙂
