7 adventure sailing holidays for your bucket list

Ice floes and icebergs in Greenland – one of the top adventure sailing holidays

From circumnavigating remote Pacific archipelagoes to Arctic fjord cruises, here are our favourite hand-picked adventure sailing holidays

Adventure sailing holidays have the ability to carry passengers to the far reaches of the world, accessing some of the most remote and magnificent scenery the world has to offer.

Having recently returned from my first tall ship sailing adventure off the west coast of Scotland, and with my interest in the high seas well and truly piqued, I take a look at some adventure sailing holidays I would love to join. For the calmer waters of European destinations, consider using professional boat hire services. This allows you to explore at your own pace while accessing lesser-visited regions.

Along the 2,600km (1,600mi) stretch of coastline between Tasiilaq and Scoresby Sund on the east coast of Greenland, barely 3,500 people carve out an existence, making it one of the most remote places in the world. This is the realm of polar bears and narwhals.

On this trip, a 38m sailing yacht carrying just 16 passengers and two crew departs from Isafjordur in Iceland taking approximately 32 hours to cross the Denmark Strait before travelling southwards along the east Greenland coast. When conditions are right there are plenty of opportunities to make landfall and explore the spectacular wilderness of Greenland.

2. South Georgia, Falklands & Antarctica voyage

Duration: 42 days, Falkland Islands to Ushuaia
Price: From €15,120 ($16,500)

The 100-year-old iconic tall ship Europa offers several Antarctic adventure sailing holidays. My favourite is the 34-day expedition from the Falkland Islands to Ushuaia in Argentina via South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula in the Weddell Sea. These iconic destinations evoke the epic journeys of discovery made by the likes of Shackleton, Scott and Amundsen.

Covering over 2,400 nautical miles (2,500km) the ship visits some of the most inhospitable yet beautiful open ocean. Expect icebergs, albatrosses and penguins, the latter in their thousands. Finally, return to civilisation by crossing the infamous Drake Passage.
