The estate has British aristocratic history as far back as the year 1088, but the actual castle dates to the early 1500s, when it was built by Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham. Shortly after construction, he was beheaded for treason for plotting to overthrow King Henry VIII, who took possession of the castle.
The king and his queen at the time, Anne Boleyn, wandered the very castle grounds that ordinary guests can stay in today. This rich history is maintained in the hotel’s antique furniture, like four-poster beds and heavy wooden doors.
